state college little lions

High School Baseball: State College preview

April 7, 2013

Coach: Bill Tussey

Assistants: Shaun Greenland, Brent Simpson

Last year’s record: 9-6

Key players lost: Mike Finlan, Tim Scholly, Cameron Walls, Saige Jenco centerfield a huge loss, speed and was leading hitter last year.

Key returnees: Dan Frye and Darian Herncane, Nick Smith, Calvin Sichler, Jason Costa.

Key newcomers: Ryan Karstetter, Nick Raquet, Ben Finland.

Skinny: The key for the Little Lions this season will be quality pitching from its younger players. Limiting free base runners via walks and errors will be important for the staff. State College must also replace Saige Jenco’s hitting and speed in centerfield. Sophomore Ryan Karstetter, who State College coach Bill Tussey said committed to Virginia, will be a player to watch.

Coach Tussey says: “We’re cautiously optimistic. We look like we could be pretty strong up the middle in terms of position players. If our pitching comes through we could potentially be pretty good. But who knows.

“Offensively, I think we’ll have to scratch a little bit but I think we can still score runs. It will just be a matter of whether our pitching can do the job, keep us in games and give us a chance.”

Editor’s note: A returning letterwinners photo for the State College baseball team was not available by press time. The photo will appear in a later edition of the Centre Daily Times.
