Penn State track & field: Lauren Kenney helps PSU win meet

Penn State’s Lauren Kenney scored a big win, helping the Nittany Lions grab the team title, at Alabama’s Crimson Tide Invitational on Saturday.

Kenney, a State College product, turned in a personal-best throw in the javelin at 176 feet, 11 inches, nearly 10 feet beyond her previous best and the second-best toss in the NCAA so far this spring. Teammate Laura Loht added a second-place finish. Michael Shuey placed second in the event on the men’s side.

Penn State took the team title with 115.5 points, edging Nebraska’s 108.5 in the six-team meet. The Nittany Lion men finished third with 107 points, and Nebraska won with 149.

The 1,600-meter relay team clinched the women’s win with a time of 3:39.22, and the 400 relay team also placed first at 45.84.

Other winners included Kiah Seymour, with a 59.24-second turn in the 400-meter hurdles; Evonne Britton at 13.62 in the 100 hurdles; Marlene Ricketts at 40-11 3/4 in the triple jump; and Melissa Kurzdorfer in the hammer at 200-0.

For the men, Brannon Kidder won the 800 in 1:47.71 and was followed by teammates Robby Creese (second), Ricky West (fourth), Ryan Brennan (fifth) and Za’von Watkins (sixth). Other winners included the 4x400 relay team in 3:07.31 and Sean Reilly at 7 feet in the high jump.

The Nittany Lions will split up for two meets next weekend, sending one squad for a meet at Bucknell and another for a meet at LSU.
