Penn State wrestling: Mark McKnight wins Pan-Am title

From CDT staff reportsApril 8, 2013

Former Penn State wrestler Mark McKnight added a new piece of hardware to his trophy case on Sunday.

McKnight won the 55-kilogram title in freestyle action at the Pan American Championships, where Team USA won the team title with 61 points to Cuba’s 48.

The former Nittany Lion 125-pounder entered the 55-kilogram field as the top-ranked wrestler at the weight and lived up to his billing. He beat Cuba’s Wber Cuero Munoz in the opening round, then shut down Guatamala’s Cristian Mox Arias in the second. McKnight outlasted Chile’s Andre Fajardo in the semifinals to set up a championship bout with second-ranked Juan Rbelin Ramirez Beltre of the Dominican Republic.

McKnight and Beltre tied 1-1 in the first period, but the former Nittany Lion, who trains with the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club, won the next two periods 3-0 and 2-1 to take the championship.
