Penn State softball: Jones pitches, hits Nittany Lions past St. Francis

Macy Jones tossed a five-hitter and smashed a two-run home run to lead Penn State to a 4-1 softball victory against Saint Francis on Tuesday night at Beard Field.

Jones’ blast, which cleared the left-center field fence gave Penn State a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning. After allowing an unearned run in the third, Jones shit down the Red Flash (16-16). Jones walked four and struck out three. She also had three of Penn State’s seven hits.

Cassidy Bell reached a program milestone in the first inning. The Nittany Lions senior smashed her 16th home run, tying the single-season record. Bell has hit in 27 of 32 games and has reached safely in 15 consecutive games.

Former Bald Eagle Area standout Taylor Parsons scored Saint Francis’ lone run. Parsons drew a walk, swiped second base and scored on a throwing error. Parsons had two walks and was 0 for 2 in the contest.

Former Philipsburg-Osceola standout Chelsea Rex played third base for the Red Flash, going 0 for 3 at the plate.

Penn State (9-23) travels to Pittsburgh for a doubleheader on Wednesday.
