UNIVERSITY PARK — Sophomore D.J. Newbill received Penn State's John Lawther Most Valuable Player Award on Friday as the team handed out honors at its annual postseason banquet.
Newbill was thrust into the role of point guard when Tim Frazier was injured early in the season. He led the Nittany Lions in scoring (16.3 ppg) and assists (4.0 apg) and was the team's second leading rebounder (5.0 rpg).
Junior Jermaine Marshall earned the Most Improved Player Award. Marshall finished sixth in the conference scoring (15.3 ppg).
Senior Sasa Borovnjak was named the Lou Lamie Most Inspirational Player. Senior Nick Colella earned the Coaches Award.
Sophomore Ross Travis earned the Scholastic Achievement Award.
Sophomore Kevin Montminy, a former Penns Valley standout, was named the winner of the Scrappiest Player Award.
Junior Alan Wisniewski received the Dave Phillips Memorial Unsung Hero Award.
