High school softball: Red Land tops State College

From CDT staff reportsApril 16, 2013

— Maggie Hahn scattered seven hits behind an outstanding defense and Red Land got a pair of home runs to defeat State College 4-2 on Monday.

“They might be the best defensive team I’ve seen since I’ve been here,” said Lady Little Lion coach Rick Hall of Red Land. “Their pitcher threw a good drop ball and we just pounded it into the ground.”

State College (4-3) did take a 2-1 lead in the top of the third, but the inning had the potential to be bigger. Laura Harris and Jess Henderson opened the inning with hits and the baserunners moved up on Lexi Mattivi’s sacrifice. Sharaya Simco followed with a rope to right field, but Red Land’s Reaghan Gettys threw out Simco at first. Michaela Rittenhouse then followed with an RBI single.

Maddie Christensen and Gettys smacked solo homers for the Patriots (5-4). State College’s Henderson allowed seven hits, walked three and struck out six. Hahn walked one and struck out one.

State College hosts Mifflin County at 4:15 on Wednesday.
