High school softball: Penns Valley offense erupts

From CDT staff reportsApril 17, 2013

— After earning its first win on Monday against Tyrone 2-1, Penns Valley exploded offensively on Tuesday for 16 hits in a 9-4 win at Huntingdon.

Mackenzie Ironside led the Lady Rams (2-3) at the plate and in the field. The freshman went 3 for 4, scored two runs and knocked in two more.

She also made an inning-ending catch at the centerfield fence in the fifth that ended the Bearcats’ rally.

“She’s only a freshman and taking on a real big responsibility playing centerfield,” said Rams head coach Don Lucas. “That was a big catch because it was the third out … and kind of took the wind out of their sails.”

Ashley Struble went 3 for 5, scored twice and drove in a run for Penns Valley who travels to Philipsburg-Osceola on Thursday.

Nicole Harbaugh (2 for 4), Kylee Wasson (2 for 4) and Morgan Royer (2 for 3) each had two hits for the Lady Rams.
