Penn State softball: Nittany Lions splits with Purdue

— The Penn State softball team broke out the bats as it split a doubleheader with Purdue on Wednesday evening at Nittany Lion Softball Park.

Penn State (11-27, 2-11 Big Ten) racked up 11 hits, including six for doubles, in an 8-4 win in the opener before the Boilermakers took the nightcap 12-3.

Karlie Habitz ripped a pair of doubles while Cassidy Bell and Reina Furuya each had a single and double in the opener. Alyssa Renwick also had a pair of hits, Alyssa Sovereign had a two-run double in a four-run fifth inning and Kaily Johnson stroked a double.

Macy Jones tossed a complete-game win, just Penn State’s second in the Big Ten this season.

Bell crushed a solo home run, was 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs as the Nittany Lions were outhit in the second game. Jones pitched 4 2/3 innings for the loss.

Furuya also had a pair of hits in the loss.

Andie Varsho and Paris Andrew each had a single and double and three RBIs to lead the Boilermakers (20-23, 7-7).

Penn State hosts Northwestern this weekend.
