Penn State softball: Northwestern takes opener

— Northwestern scored five runs in the sixth inning to pull away from Penn State 8-3 Friday night at the Nittany Lion Softball Park.

Andrea DiPrima cracked a two-run home run and Olivia Duehr followed with a solo homer during the big inning.

Alyssa Sovereign was 3-for-4 with a double, Shannon Hutchinson had a pair of hits and Kailyn Johnson plated two runs for the Nittany Lions (11-28, 2-12).

Macy Jones (10-11) took the loss, giving up nine hits and seven runs with one walk and three strikeouts.

Amy Letourneau (14-9) earned the complete-game win, striking out 10, walking five and giving up seven hits. She also had an RBI double in the first.

The teams will continue their three-game series Saturday afternoon.
