High school boys volleyball: State College fares well at Hempfield Invitational

— State College finished 9-0 in pool play and 1-1 in the playoff round at the Hempfield Invitational on Saturday.

The Little Lions scored 3-0 victories against Meadville, Steel Valley and Hempfield in pool play. They knocked off Hempfield 25-12 in the opening round of playoff action, but fell 25-17 to eventual champion Meadville.

Ibrahim Almoaiqel’s led State College with 31 kills and eight aces. Eric Deshong notched 17 kills, 5 aces and 6 1/2 blocks. Noah Hanahan added 49 digs, while Andrew Groves dished out 68 assists and blocked six shots.

‘The varsity looked good,” State College coach Kim-Li Kimel said. “We’re back to righting the ship.”

The State College JV team finished second in the event, falling 25-20 to Greater Latrobe in the final.

State College hosts Central Dauphin East on Tuesday.
