Penn State baseball: Nittany Lions top Iowa, win Big Ten series for first time this season

— Penn State loaded the bases on bunts and scored four runs in the fifth inning to beat Iowa 7-4 on Sunday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park..

The Nittany Lions (10-25 overall, 2-10 league) won their first Big Ten series of the season.

With the score tied at 2-2, Alex Farkes and James Coates reached on bunt singles to lead off the fifth. Steve Snyder then reached on an error on his sacrifice bunt to load the bases. J.C. Coban and Taylor Skerpon followed with two-run doubles to blow the game open.

Coban (3 RBIs) and Farkes led the Nittany Lions with two hits each. Greg Welsh (2-3) earned the win, allowing three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings. Cody Lewis allowed two hits and a run over the final 3 1/3 to pick up his second save.

Eric Toole had three hits for the Hawkeyes (14-20, 2-9).

Penn State next plays host to La Salle at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
