Penn State softball: Northwestern Wildcats sweep Lions

— Northwestern’s Amy Letourneau outdueled Penn State’s Jordan Wheatley as the Wildcats swept a weekend series with a 2-1 victory on Sunday at Beard Field.

Letourneau (17-9) allowed four hits, walked eight and struck out seven. Wheatley (1-3) surrendered nine hits, struck out three and did not walk a batter. Reina Furuya’s homer in the fifth was the lone run for Penn State (11-30 overall, 2-14 Big Ten).

Anna Edwards drove in both runs for Northwestern (25-16, 9-5).

Northwestern walked Penn State slugger Cassiday Bell three times Sunday and nine times in the series.

Penn State will host Kent State in a doubleheader Wednesday that begins at 3 p.m.
