High school baseball: Bald Eagle Area earns comeback win at Clearfield

From CDT staff reportsApril 26, 2013

— Jon Romine was huge on the mound and Logan Reese was big at the plate, helping Bald Eagle Area earn a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over Clearfield on Thursday.

After struggling to throw strikes early, Romine found a rhythm and even took a no-hitter into the sixth.

“He showed composure in regaining it,” said head coach Jim Gardner. “A younger, less-experienced kid may have packed it in, but he stood strong in there and took control of things.”

However, the senior’s four walks in the first spotted the Bison, and pitcher Jon Janocko, an early 1-0 lead.

Janocko kept the Eagles (7-2) off the scoreboard until the pivotal fifth inning.

A Gage Gardner (1-for-2, RBI) sacrifice fly scored Ben Verbitskey (0-for-2, run) to start the Eagles’ rally. Then Reese hit a three-run home run to left that gave BEA its first, albeit short-lived, lead.

The Bison finally touched Romine for three hits and three more runs in the bottom half, tying the game at 4 after six.

But, the Eagles, who host Central Mountain (3-5) on Friday, would not be denied.

Bryce Greene (2-for-4, run) came up in the seventh and tripled to right-center field. When the relay throw was bobbled, the speedy junior bolted for home and scored the eventual winning run.

“We lost on Monday to Central, but this was a big win,” Gardner said. “And we have another big one tomorrow.”
