Boys’ tennis: State College duo advance to District 6 doubles finals

From CDT staff reportsMay 4, 2013

— State College’s Ed Badding and Dan Shull advanced to the District 6 Class AAA Doubles Tournament finals with a pair of victories Friday.

In the quarterfinals, Badding and Shull rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Central Mountain’s Tom Rodabaugh and Daniel Hendricks. The Little Lion duo had a stiffer test in the semifinals, outlasting Altoona’s Ryan Good and Chad Allender 7-5, 6-7 and 6-2.

Badding and Shull will face Hollidaysburg’s Amir Alkhafaji and Eric Miller on Saturday. Alkhafaji and Miller spoiled an all State College final by topping the Little Lions’ Luke Plowden and Enrique Del Castillo 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals. Plowden and Del Castillo routed Central Mountain’s Nick Adgate and Brody White 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

“All four guys played well today,” State College coach Jane Borden said. “Luke had a great tournament and Enrique did a nice job. Ed and Dan played well at times, but I really have to credit Ryan and Chad. They played excellent doubles and made some incredible shots and gets. Dan was very steady today and when Edward took charge at the net, things went well in the third set.”
