Penn State softball: Minnesota bounces Lions from Big Ten tournament

— Penn State’s season came to a end Friday with a shutout loss to third-seeded Minnesota in the Big Ten tournament.

The Golden Gophers (34-16) plated two runs in the second and one each in the fourth and fifth innings to cruise to a 4-0 quarterfinal win. Penn State (16-34) managed just two hits against Minnesota pitcher Sara Moulton, who improved to 30-9 on the season with nine strikeouts against the Nittany Lions.

Penn State, which advanced to the quarters with a win over Illinois on Thursday, got hits from Lauren Yao and Shannon Hutchinson in the loss.

Marissa Diescher took the loss for Penn State while Macy Jones pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief. Penn State pitchers combined for eight walks and two strikeouts but also held the Gophers to just three hits.

Penn State's six seniors, including first-team All-Big Ten center fielder Cassidy Bell, left fielder Hutchinson, first baseman Kailyn Johnson, pitcher Rachel Myers, second baseman Alyssa Renwick and third baseman Yao, played their last game.
