Police: Hawaii man arrested in State College on DUI charge

From CDT staff reportsMay 13, 2013

A Hawaii man was arrested Sunday afternoon on a charge of DUI after police said they got a report of a drunken man driving out of a downtown State College parking lot.

State College police smelled alcohol on Thomas Penders Jr., 36, of Naalehu, Hawaii, after a traffic stop in a commercial plaza on South Atherton Street near West Branch Road on Sunday shortly after 4 p.m. Police said someone from Baby’s Restaurant reported that a drunken man had left the restaurant and was seen in a pickup truck leaving the parking lot across South Garner Street.

Police said Penders swayed from side to side.

Penders refused a blood test at Mount Nittany Medical Center and swore at police.

Penders was jailed on $1,000 bail and is awaiting a preliminary hearing on Wednesday.
