High school baseball: Penns Valley triumphs over Clearfield

From CDT staff reportsMay 15, 2013

— It was supposed to be an experimental game, time for Penns Valley coach Chuck Romig to tinker with his lineup and get a few different looks in preparation for the postseason.

It ended up working out for the Rams (9-9) who beat Clearfield 8-4 in the final regular season tuneup before the District 6 Class AA playoffs begin on Thursday. Penns Valley, the No. 10 seed, will travel to Mt. Union to take on the No. 10 Trojans in a first-round matchup.

“I wanted to get different pitchers some looks and get them some innings,” Romig said. “I told them, ‘We have to look at (this game) as a chance to sharpen some things up.”

And the Rams did just that. Save for one error, Penns Valley was flawless in the field and outhit Clearfield (5-10) 8-6.

Meanwhile, Wyatt Sharp went 3-for-4 and knocked in three runs with three doubles. Max Bair, Cody Luse and Adam DeGarmo combined to strike out eight Clearfield hitters.

DeGarmo picked up his first win of the season.
