High school baseball: State College splits doubleheader

— State College concluded its regular season with a long afternoon, splitting a doubleheader with an 8-4 win over Mifflin County and an 8-7 loss to Chambersburg at Community Field.

In the opener against Mifflin County, State College snapped a 4-4 tie with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Dan Fry’s two-run single was the big hit in the outburst. Jason Costa added an RBI single.

Ben Finlan (6-1) scattered 12 hits in going the distance for the win. He struck out four and did not walk a batter. Fry had two hits and drove in three. Darian Herncane and Costa each plated two runs.

After a wild first two innings, Chambersburg’s run in the fifth was the difference.

Trailing 7-0, the Little Lions scored seven in the second to tie the game. Herncane’s three-run double highlighted the outburst. Ryan Karstetter and Calvin Sichler each had RBI doubles.

Ken Craig and Karstetter each had two hits in the contest for the Little Lions (14-6), who concluded their regular season. Top-seeded State College will host No. 4 Altoona in the semifinals of the District 6 Class AAAA Tournament at 4 p.m. on May 23.
