PIAA girls’ lacrosse: State College falls in quarterfinals

— The State College’s girls’ lacrosse season ended in the PIAA quarterfinals Saturday as the Lady Little Lions fell 16-4 against District 7 champion Peters Township at Mansion Park.

State College (Caitlin McGlaughlin had a goal and an assist to lead the State College, which finished the season 18-2.

The Lady Little Lions opened the PIAAs with a 21-14 victory over Shady Side, which fell 16-14 against Peters Township in the WPIAL championship and handed the Lady Indians one of their two losses (12-10) in the regular season..

Saturday’s matchup wasn’t close as the Lady Indians (19-2) peppered State College with 34 shots. Lady Little Lion goalie Kristin Sonsteby made 13 saves.

Kendall Loviscky,Sam Washell and Julia Harvey also scored for State College. Katie Mahon had an assist.

Peters Township advances to face the winner between District 12 champion Radnor and District 1 runner-up Springfield, which played late Saturday.

The Lady Indians were led by three midfielders, who will attend Division I colleges. Caitlin Carey is headed to Duke, while Hannah Wilcox and Sarah Bootma, will attend Jacksonville University and American University, respectively.

Carly Haffner, captain Katie Mahon, Samantha Malizia, TaNeel Real Bird, captain Sonsteby and Anna Stevenson were the seniors on the State College roster.
