In 2013, after fifty-three years of extraordinary music-making, the American Brass Quintet earned Chamber Music America’s highest honor for “significant and lasting contributions to the field.” Internationally respected as an elite chamber music ensemble, “the high priests of brass” (Newsweek) have amassed a discography of fifty-plus albums and premiered more than 150 contemporary works. Tours have taken the quintet to five continents and all fifty of the United States. The quintet, in residence at The Juilliard School since 1987 and the Aspen Music Festival since 1970, features trumpeters Raymond Mase and Kevin Cobb, hornist David Wakefield, trombonist Michael Powell, and bass trombonist John D. Rojak. The Penn State concert features a diverse program, including the ensemble’s editions of works by Renaissance masters Claudio Monteverdi and Thomas Morley, plus Joan Tower’s Copperwave, a recent work commissioned by the quintet.
