Police: Train hits pickup truck in Union Township; alcohol a factor

From CDT staff reportsJune 16, 2013

— No injuries were reported after a train crashed into a pickup truck early Saturday morning, but alcohol is believed to be a factor, state police at Philipsburg said.

Coty Johnson, 22, attempted to turn a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado into a private driveway off South Eagle Valley Road, south of Dix Run Road. According to police, he missed the driveway, and the vehicle got stuck in a ditch next to railroad tracks.

A Norfolk Southern locomotive struck the front of the vehicle, which was sticking out onto the tracks, causing severe damage. Police said Johnson was able to escape before impact, and the vehicle was towed from the scene.

The incident occurred at 1:07 a.m. Saturday in Union Township, and the train sustained minor damage.

Police said Johnson appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and was arrested at the scene. He will be charged pending blood test results.
