Letter to the editor | An obligation to care

June 18, 2013

I thank Centre County Commissioner Michael Pipe for the work he’s done in offering solutions for Centre Crest.

I strongly believe we have a responsibility to take care of those who cannot take care of themselves, and Centre Crest plays a large role in that regard.

Most Centre Crest residents are covered by Medicaid, which many other nursing homes refuse to accept.

It’s disappointing to see U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan continue to talk of ending Medicare. It’s disheartening to watch as Gov. Tom Corbett refuses to expand Medicaid to hundreds of thousands of poor Pennsylvanians.

And it’s troubling that commissioners Steve Dershem and Chris Exarchos are considering ending Centre Crest as we know it.
