From CDT staff reportsJune 22, 2013

— The State College American Legion baseball team dropped a pair of 2-1 games on the first day of the Pennsylvania Wood Bat Open on Friday at the Shaner Complex.

State College opened with a loss to Berkshire, N.Y., with a bases-loaded fly ball by Jimmy Dibangi dropped to bring in the only two runs.

Sam Plafcan’s RBI double in the second inning accounted for the State College scoring, with Zach Smeal taking the loss after giving up six hits and one walk with four strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings.

Ben Finlan also had a strong showing on the mound in the second game, but three of the seven hits he allowed came in the seventh inning when Saint Aires, Md., put across the winning run with two out.

A Plafcan RBI double, again in the second inning, brought home the only State College run.
