American Legion baseball: State College earns win, tie

— The State College American Legion team edged Souderton and tied Hatfield in a doubleheader on Saturday.

After a 5-5 tie with Hatfield in which the teams reached the maxium time allowed to play, State College (7-8-1) upended Souderton 6-5.

Derek Van Horn and Ken Craig hit back-to-back singles before Sam Plafcan notched the game-winning RBI with two outs in the top of the sixth.

State College pitcher Jon Herzing, who relieved starter Craig in the fifth, shut Souderton’s offense down the rest of the way. He notched six strikeouts to pick up a save.
