State College police: Masked man beats hotel clerk

A night desk clerk at the Hotel State College was assaulted early Monday morning by an unidentified man wielding a large skeleton key, borough police said.

Police are searching for the suspect, who repeatedly hit the clerk with the key in what authorities are calling a possible attempted robbery. The assault occurred around 1:50 a.m.

Police described the man as 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall with a heavy, muscular build. He was wearing all black clothing and a black Spider-Man mask.

The clerk was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center for observation after the assault.

Nothing was reported missing from the hotel after the incident. But police think the assault may have been a robbery attempt, judging by the man’s attire.

The key used in the assault and the mask were left behind. The key, which appears to be a decoration or paperweight, is about a foot long and weighs a little more than a pound.

Police said they will send the items to a crime lab to obtain possible DNA evidence.

Meanwhile, anyone with information is asked to call State College police at 234-7150.
