Penn State wrestling: Nittany Lions land nation’s top heavyweight recruit

From CDT staff reportsJuly 3, 2013

Another heavyweight position battle could be looming on the distant horizon for the Penn State wrestling team.

Clovis High School (Calif.) senior Nick Nevills verbally committed to the three-time defending NCAA champions on Tuesday. Nevills' commitment, which is non-binding until he signs a National Letter of Intent, was first reported by Flo Wrestling.

Ranked the No. 1 heavyweight in the country by Flo, Nevills is on pace to join the Nittany Lions in time for the 2014-15 season. His commitment was the second in the 2014 recruiting class from a top-flight heavyweight. Solanco standout Thomas Haines committed to Penn State before his junior season began last fall.

Haines, ranked as the No. 2 220-pounder in the country by Flo, is a three-time PIAA Class AAA champion. Nevills, who won a state championship as a freshman in 2011, went 53-0 last season with 44 pins for Clovis.

Both vaunted heavyweights will join the Nittany Lions in a time of need. Current heavyweights Jon Gingrich and Jimmy Lawson, who flip-flopped as the team's starter last season, will be out of eligibility following the 2014-15 season.
