Penn State wrestling: David Taylor earns bronze medal at World University Games

— Penn State wrestler David Taylor earned a bronze medal at the World University Games on Friday.

The three-time All-American was the lone medalist of the three Nittany Lions who competed in Russia.

Taylor won the bronze at 74 kilograms in men’s freestyle, beating two-time Asian Senior bronze medalist Gombodorj Dorjvaanchig of Mongolia, 10-3.

Taylor opened with a 4-1 win over Zurabi Erbotsonashvili of Georgia, then posted an 8-0 technical fall on Apostolos Taskoudis of Greece. He then lost in the quarterfinals by 8-0 technical fall to Olympic bronze medalist Denis Tsargush of Russia before pinning Iran’s Reza Afzalipaemami in 6 minutes in the repechage round to earn a spot in the bronze medal match.

Also, Nico Megaludis posted a 1-1 record at 55 kilograms, earning a 6-5 win over Yasar Aliyev of Azerbaijan before falling to Iran's Yaser Heidargholinez.

Two-time NCAA champion Ed Ruth lost in his lone bout, falling to Iran's Mohammed Mohammadian at 84 kilograms.
