Centre County Baseball League playoffs: Myers hits for cycle as Philipsburg pounds Pleasant Gap

From CDT staff reportsJuly 17, 2013

— A back-and-forth game turned into a one-sided affair and Philipsburg took a stranglehold on its first-round Centre County Baseball League playoff series against Pleasant Gap with a 31-9 win on Tuesday.

The Peppers used three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 7-6 lead over top-seeded Philipsburg, but the Pirates rebounded with five combined runs in the top of the fourth and fifth to regain the lead. The Peppers put two more runners across the plate in the bottom of the sixth to cut Philipsburg’s lead to 11-9, but the Pirates pulled away after that, running off 20 unanswered runs in the sixth and seventh innings to turn the game into a laugher.

Brandon Myers hit for the cycle for Philipsburg while Matt McCamley and A.J. Robinson added home runs. The Pirates got five walks, five hits and a two-run shot from McCamley, followed by a three-run blast from Myers in the sixth. John Shaffer, who also picked up the win for Philipsburg, hit a grand slam in the seventh to pile on more runs.

Pleasant Gap was led by Tyler Lalli, who knocked three singles. Dan Roan, Greg Reeder and Trey Burger drilled two hits apiece for the Peppers, who will face elimination in Game 3 at Philipsburg on Thursday.
