Centre County Baseball League playoffs: Clarence prevails over Spring Mills, advances to semis

From CDT staff reportsJuly 24, 2013

— After enduring a 20-minute rain delay, Spring Mills nearly shocked Clarence with a five-run seventh inning before the Mounties prevailed in the bottom of the inning to close out the opening round of the Centre County Baseball League playoffs Tuesday night.

The Braves scored all five runs with two out in the seventh to tie the game before Josh Wensel’s single plated the winning run for a 14-13 Mounties win. Brad Kling had doubled and Dylan Schall singled to put runners on the corners before Wensel’s game-ender.

Derek Jabco led the way with a 4-for-5 night at the plate, including a pair of doubles, as the teams combined for 33 hits. Ryan MacNamara and Brian Kochik each belted two-run home runs while Wensel had three hits and four RBIs

Down 13-8 with two out in the seventh, Cody Young started the Braves’ rally with a double. A hit batter preceded Kevin Conklin’s RBI single, a two-run single for Brady Waltz and a bases-loaded walk to George Conklin came later.

Jordan Brennan then laced a single to tie the game, but right fielder Jeff Koleno threw out George Conklin at home plate when he tied to score on the play to deny Spring Mills the go-ahead run. Kochik, who pitched the first 6 2/3 innings before MacNamara appeared in relief, made the tag at home plate.

Mike Vogt had the big bat for the Braves with a single, double and solo home run in the sixth inning, with Waltz collecting three hits and Young posting two doubles.

The Mounties open a best-of-five semifinal series with Lemont on Thursday at Spring Creek Park.
