Penn State athletics: More Nittany Lions finding academic success

— A school-record 450 Penn State student-athletes earned a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher during the spring semester, the university reported.

The total number represented 60 percent of Penn State’s student-athlete population of 750. Also, a school-record 189 athletes earned Dean’s List honors, the total combined GPA for the spring over all 31 varsity sports was 3.10, and 22 teams had a GPA of 3.0 for the semester.

Other school records achieved included 109 student-athletes graduated in May, 296 earned Academic All-Big Ten honors and 68 earned the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award for a GPA of 3.7 or higher.

Also, seven Nittany Lions captured Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America honors and two were named winners of the Elite 89 Award, given to the student-athlete at an NCAA Championship with the highest GPA in each sport.
