The State Correctional Institution at Rockview is on lockdown after a staff member was assaulted by an inmate Thursday.

Susan McNaughton, a Department of Corrections spokeswoman, confirmed an inmate-on-staff assault occurred at the prison. State police are investigating, but few other details of the assault have been released.

McNaughton said the prison was locked down around 10:30 a.m. in response to the incident. The lockdown is expected to remain in effect until sometime Friday.

The spokeswoman said she didn’t have additional information and directed questions to the state police. She said DOC officials will work cooperatively with troopers, who along with prosecutors will determine whether charges are filed.

State police at Rockview remained at the scene late Thursday investigating the assault. A dispatcher said investigators were not available to comment. Police did not release additional information.

McNaughton said that DOC officials conduct internal reviews after such incidents and provide counseling opportunities to employees.

“DOC and institution staff takes every assault seriously,” she said in an email.
