— Piano, jazz guitar and a low thump of the bass could be heard around Bellefonte Saturday as jazz musicians performed at numerous venues throughout the borough.

This was the third day of the 2013 Summer Jazz Celebration hosted by JazzPA — an annual four-day festival that celebrates jazz music and its musicians.

JazzPA President Catherine Dupuis, who also performed, said the festival attracts about 1,000 people a day.

“Jazz is a musical art form we all know,” Dupuis said. “It’s the foundation of all music.”

John and Donna Bertrand traveled from Pittsburgh Saturday morning to make it to the opening act by 11:30 a.m. at Talleyrand Park.

“We’ve probably come from the furthest way. We’ve run into a lot of locals so far, but really just enjoy jazz music and like to see new acts and performers and different jazz fests in different towns,” said John Bertrand.

According to JazzPA, the festival began in State College in 2005 as a one-day event. By 2008, the festival expanded to four days and was moved to Bellefonte.

“If you like jazz, this is the place to be,” Dupuis said.

The festival will continue throughout the day Sunday.
