— Four-year-old Madison Daley sees birds at her house every day. But on Saturday morning, she was able to put a name with the feather.

Children from around the area gathered at the Bellefonte Community Children’s Garden for “Birds of a Feather Flock Together” — an event that educated local youth on the kinds of birds they see on a daily basis.

The event was hosted by the Bellefonte Community Children’s Garden and sponsored by the Centre County Library, the Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of Centre County and the Bellefonte Garden Club.

Judy Shawley interacted with about a dozen kids on the sights and sounds of a bird, while helping them with crafts including making a homemade bird feeder with Cheerios and pipe cleaners.

“I liked the nest the best,” Madison said as she and the other kids passed around bird nests.

Nancy Stover, of the Bellefonte Garden Club, said the events are environmentally focused and attract about a dozen children.

Next month’s children’s prgram will be held 10 a.m. Aug. 17 and wll focus on bugs.

“It gets a good turnout and we like to see children come out and interact with each other and have some fun getting their hands dirty with nature,” Stover said.
