State College Spikes: Adams celebrated with bobblehead

— Philipsburg native Matt Adams, a first baseman with the St. Louis Cardinals, was honored with a bobblehead doll of his likeness before State College clashed with Tri-City on Wednesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Adams, 24, is in his first full season with the Cardinals, who finished a four-game series in Pittsburgh Wednesday night.

His mother, father and sister, however, were at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park and each threw out a ceremonial first pitch.

“It’s a special feeling,” Adams’ father, Jaime, said of his son being remembered. “He’s worked hard for everything he’s done and now it’s paying off.”

“It’s nice to see the fans and our church is here tonight,” said Adams’ mother, Lisa. “Just the people in the community coming out, so it’s nice that they’re sharing that with us.”

His sister, Kaylee, was also in attendance.

A lengthy line formed near the stadium’s entrance pregame as only the first 1,000 fans received the doll, which is of Adams in his Philipsburg-Osceola High School uniform.

The left-handed slugger, who was a Division II Player of the Year at Slippery Rock University, is hitting .285 with seven homers and 30 RBIs with the Cardinals.

However, his parents are most proud of their son off the field.

“For him being a young gentleman,” Jaime said. “He treats everyone great. The little kids, he takes the time with them.”

“For us as parents,” said Lisa Adams, “we’re proud when people say he’s humble. … So for us it’s nice to hear that about our son.”
