Greg Myford leaving Penn State athletics for post at sports marketing company

— Greg Myford, Penn State’s associate athletic director for business relations and communications, is leaving the university.

Myford said he has accepted a position as associate vice president for IMG College in its Southeast Region. Myford will depart Penn State by the end of August, he said.

Penn State confirmed the news late Friday. Myford announced his decision earlier in an email to university colleagues.

“Greg has been a tremendous part of our team for the past eight-plus years,” Dave Joyner, director of athletics, said in a statement. “We wish Greg and his family the best as he begins this exciting new chapter.”

Myford is a native of Grove City and a 1986 Penn State graduate. He has been in his post with intercollegiate athletics since November 2004.

His duties have included the oversight of marketing and promotions, communications, ticket sales and sponsorship rights agreements, as well as the athletics website www.GoPSUsports.com.

IMG College is a top “collegiate multimedia, marketing and licensing/brand management company,” its website said. IMG College, based in Winston Salem, N.C., represents 200 collegiate properties, including the NCAA.

“My focus will be on the sponsorship and media rights-holder aspect of the business,” Myford said, “and I will work with the IMG schools in Florida and Alabama.”

Joyner said Penn State will conduct a national search for a replacement.

“As with all positions in the department, our intention is to identify and recruit the very best candidate who can build upon the successful foundation for academic and athletic achievement we have in place,” Joyner said.

In 2011, Penn State partnered with IMG College Ticket Solutions for the marketing of athletics tickets.

In announcing the venture at that time, Myford said: “IMG has a track record of great success on campuses across the nation, and we’re confident that working together we can have an immediate impact on getting more Nittany Lion fans to more games more often.”

Myford will be the third individual with ties to the athletics department’s marketing efforts to depart since early 2012. Top sports pitch-man Guido D’Elia left in February of last year. Penn State in March 2013 said it had cut ties with a marketing firm that employed Jeff Fisher, who had done promotional work with the university.

Myford previously spent 12 years with Palace Sports & Entertainment. In 2003, he was named senior vice president of corporate development for PS&E as well as the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning, the AFL’s Tampa Bay Storm and the St. Pete Times Forum, where both teams played.

“I am grateful for the education, friendships, experiences and life lessons that Penn State provided me,” Myford said in his email. “The last eight years, I’m hopeful, have allowed me to contribute back a mere fraction of what was provided to me as a student and, more recently, employee. It has also been a wonderful place to call home for a family that arrived with two elementary school girls, who are now young women preparing for college.”
