State College man who raped sleeping woman to serve up to 15 years in prison

From CDT staff reportsAugust 8, 2013

A 21-year-old State College man will spend at least five and a half years in state prison for raping a woman in her sleep while she was in the area visiting friends and family for Thanksgiving.

Angel Alvarado was sentenced Thursday by Centre County Judge Pamela Ruest to serve five and a half to 15 years in prison.

He must also register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Prosecutors sought a severe sentence, in the aggravated range, saying in part that Alvarado exhibited predatory behavior, carried out a premeditated act and showed no remorse after his arrest and during his trial.

A Centre County jury convicted Alvarado in June on felony counts of rape of an unconscious victim and sexual assault.

Authorities said Alvarado and the woman were staying at a mutual friend’s home when the assault occurred Nov. 25, 2011. The woman had gone shopping early that morning and returned to the home around 12:30 p.m. to sleep.

When she woke, her clothing was partially removed and Alvarado was sitting beside her on the couch with no shirt on. The woman went to Mount Nittany Medical Center for examination and Alvarado’s DNA was found, prosecutors said.

“This kind of attacker is every bit as dangerous as one that (SIC) uses overwhelming force because he takes advantage of those who are completely and utterly vulnerable and cannot fight back,” Centre County District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller said in a statement. “He held a position of friendship and trust with the victim so it was the ultimate betrayal. He will have a very long time in (state prison) to think about it now.”
