— Although Penn State and Virginia Tech are separated by only about 375 miles, the Nittany Lions and Hokies have never met on the football field.

That will change in 2022 when Penn State travels to Blacksburg, Va., on Sept. 17. The Hokies will play in Beaver Stadium on Sept. 16, 2023.

“We are excited to be able to announce this football series with Virginia Tech,” Penn State Director of Athletics Dave Joyner said in a release. “Virginia Tech is an opponent our alumni and fans have been asking about adding to the schedule.”

Despite having never played Virginia Tech, Penn State is no stranger to Virginia foes.

The Nittany Lions own a 5-3 record against Virginia, have beaten VMI in their only meeting and are 4-0 against William and Mary.

The upcoming series will give Virginia Tech Athletic Director Jim Weaver a chance to see his alma mater in person. Weaver earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Penn State in 1967 and 1968, respectively, and played linebacker and center for the Nittany Lions.

Weaver, a Harrisburg native, coached as a graduate assistant (1967-68) and as an assistant coach with Penn State from 1969-1972.
