High school golf: State College wins Yurochko golf title

From CDT staff reportsAugust 27, 2013

The State College boys’ golf team improved to 9-1 with its first invitational title this season after a team score of 144 won the Yurochko Invitational at Iron Masters Country Club.

A pair of two-man teams played the 6,093 yard, par-72 course well for the Little Lions as they edged Hollidaysburg (151) and Penn Cambria (156).

Alex Stover and Christian Friberg shot a team-best 2-under 70 for State College, while Nick Kiraly and Tyrus Gates combined for 74.

Each team played six holes of alternate shot, six holes of scramble and six holes of better ball to complete an 18-hole round.

Stover and Friberg eventually found a rhythm and shot a 5-under 31 through holes 10-18, which spanned the alternate shot and scramble portions of the round.

The win could create some positive momentum for head coach Keith Bless’ squad heading into a difficult upcoming stretch. “We’re coming into the meat of the Mid-Penn schedule and those will be some challenging meets for us,” Bless said.

The Little Lions travel to Palmyra on Tuesday for a 2 p.m. match against the Cougars followed by a Wednesday match with Hershey at Hershey Country Club East.
