Penn State soccer: Nittany Lions suffer first loss 5-1

— No. 9 Penn State had the early lead but could not keep pace with No. 5 Virginia in a 5-1 loss Friday evening.

Maya Hayes converted a cross from mallory Weber for a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute, but the Cavaliers controlled the match after that.

Morgan Brian, Makenzy Doniak and Kate Norbo scored for a 3-1 lead at halftime, then Shasta Fisher and Brittany Ratcliffe converted after the break.

Morgan Stearns made two saves for the win, while Britt Eckerstrom stopped eight Cavalier shots. Virginia outshot Penn State 27-9.

The Nittany Lions (1-1-1) host La Salle on Sunday.
