Letter to the editor | Contact your representatives

September 10, 2013

Our legislators have been elected to carry out the wishes of the citizens; the very title “representative” conveys this notion.

It disturbs me to see our country hurtling toward another war in the Middle East, despite the wishes of the vast majority of American citizens.

A cursory glance at history shows that legislators working against the wishes of the people led to the American Revolution and created our representative government — a government of the people, by the people and for the people.

Another glance at history shows that the people of the Middle East have been at war with each other for all of recorded history and that any outside intervention has led to more strife.

Our soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen have volunteered to defend American citizens, not risk their lives meddling in Middle Eastern politics.

I urge everyone to contact their elected officials — from township supervisors to the president of the United States — and remind them of their duty as representatives.
