Au Bon Pain restaurant opens at Penn State

From CDT staff reportsSeptember 10, 2013

— National chain Au Bon Pain has opened a restaurant in the Kern Building on Penn State’s campus.

A university spokesman said the restaurant opened on Friday after it had been under construction since May. The restaurant replaced Otto’s Cafe, a cafeteria-style eatery that had been a fixture in the building for many years.

Au Bon Pain manages and staffs the new campus restaurant.

A satellite location opened Monday at Zoller Gallery, and another smaller location is scheduled to open Wednesday at the IST Building.

Penn State officials had said the university was looking at a national brand to take the place of the university-owned-and-operated Otto’s Cafe. The infrastructure at Otto’s Cafe, such as the heating and cooling, was in need of replacing, and trends have shown that college students want national chain restaurants.
