Scholastic Boys’ cross country: State College captures Spiked Shoe title

September 15, 2013

— With four runners in the top 10, State College edged Carlisle to capture its third straight Spiked Shoe Invitational at the Penn State Golf Course on Friday.

The Little Lions tallied 57 points to 64 for the Thundering Herd, who won a dual meet between the teams in Carlisle last week. The Herd’s Zach Brehm was the overall winner in 15 minutes, 46 seconds around the 5-kilometer course.

“It was really close,” Little Lion coach Dave Felice said. “We didn’t realize we won until they posted the results. We were trying to count up the numbers ourselves and it was too close to be sure. The guys stepped up and ran exceptionally well.”

State College, with a mere 14-second spread among its top four finishers, was led by a third-place finish for Will Cather in 16:22. he was followed by Chris Golembeski in fifth (16:23), Matt Beyerle in ninth (16:29) and Kyle Adams in 10th (16:36).

Bellefonte was 17th in the 24-team field with 460 points, paced by Mathew Dabiero in 71st place in 18:10 and Michael O’Donnell in 84th in 18:38.
