Penn State soccer: Big Ten honors Hayes as Offensive Player of the Week

September 17, 2013

— Penn State’s Maya Hayes was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after three solid performances for the Nittany Lions.

The senior forward had a goal and an assist in a 6-0 win at Bucknell on Tuesday, then netted the game-winning goals in a 4-2 win at Oklahoma State and a 3-2 victory at Tulsa over the weekend. Her score in the win over the Golden Hurricane came with 20 seconds left in regulation.

Hayes has scored in all but one of the No. 13 Nittany Lions’ matches this season, she leads the Big Ten and is third in Division I for total goals (9) and points (21) and her averages for goals and points per game also lead the conference. Also, her 61 career goals is third on Penn State’s all-time list, her 140 points in 74 games is fourth in program history and no active player in Division I has more goals or points than Hayes.

The Nittany Lions (6-1-1) open Big Ten action Friday night, hosting Northwestern at Jeffrey Field.
