Letter to the editor | Define justice

September 17, 2013

There is a sense of justice that steps back in righteous indignation and beats its opponent over the head in homicidal rage.

So President Barack Obama would punish the use of chemical weapons in Syria by dropping bombs on the country.

About 1,000 died in the chemical attack.

How many more would die in an American illegal attack on a country that has not attacked us?

And would these deaths be justice?

Surely not.

The president spoke at the memorial for the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

In that speech, King called for the use of soul force rather than physical force.

Let us use this and convene a regional conference to end the Syrian civil war.

Then the president will earn his peace prize.
