Letter to the editor | Many reasons for strike

September 17, 2013

In response to Rep. Glenn Thompson’s claim (CDT, Sept. 4) that there was no reason to attack Syria, there are many reasons.

There are equally as many reasons to not attack.

As stated by New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman in a column published in the Sept. 5 CDT, the administration has “clearly struggled with its Syria policy but, in fairness, this is a wickedly complex problem.”

The challenge for lawmakers is to thoughtfully and carefully weigh the two sets of arguments.

This has not been an easy decision.

To say there are no reasons to support either argument — especially when all the issues are still not known — is a sign of someone who will have difficulty reaching a thoughtful and careful decision.
