Letter to the editor | I’ve seen Obamacare‘s benefits

September 20, 2013

The Republicans plan to shut down the government unless the budget defunds Obamacare.

This is truly a terrible plan. It ignores all the benefits that the Affordable Care Act brings to the population.

I have a daughter who illustrates some of the benefits. She had breast cancer a couple of years ago, which is now a pre-existing condition. But with Obamacare, her health insurance company can’t drop her because of this.

She has twin sons who have just started college. They will be able to stay on their parents’ health care policy until they are 26, which may be required because they are very bright and will likely go to graduate school.

She and her husband have a small business with a low income, so the opportunity exists for them to get tax credits to help cover the cost of health insurance, and the cost of the insurance will be less than it is now. What the Republicans seem to fear is Obamacare being successful. That is why they want to stop it now.

Call or write to Rep. Glenn Thompson and tell him that shutting down the government to prevent Obamacare from taking effect is unacceptable.
