Man charged in connection with Spring Township car theft

An East Freedom man was arrested Friday by Cresson police in connection with a car theft in Centre County on Sept. 14, Spring Township police said.

Steven Cornwell Jr. was charged with one count of felony theft, one count of misdemeanor theft, one count of misdemeanor unauthorized use of a vehicle, one count of misdemeanor receiving stolen property and a summary offense of driving with a suspended license, according to court documents.

Police received a felony warrant for Cornwell after they said he stole a car from the Spring Brae Apartments parking lot. Police said there was a cellphone in the car that Cornwell continued to use and was tracked to the Bedford area.

The car was located in Bedford by state police and Cornwell was identified by the car’s owner as a suspect, police said. Cornwell was found to be in possession of the stolen cellphone when he was arrested .

He was arraigned by District Judge Carmine Prestia on $15,000 bail. He was taken to Centre County Correctional Facility after being unable to post the bail.

Cornwell’s preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 2, according to court documents.
