Penn State women’s soccer: Church picks up Big Ten honor

September 24, 2013

— Penn State’s Whitney Church, often honored for her defensive skills, was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.

The junior defender, who was last season’s Defensive Player of the Year in the conference, scored twice as the No. 9 Nittany Lions rallied to a 3-2 overtime win over Northwestern. Trailing 2-0, Church headed in a Raquel Rodriguez corner kick with just over 10 minutes left in regulation, then scored from 20 yards out with less than four minutes left in the second overtime.

Penn State (7-1-1) hosts Purdue on Thursday.
