Our View | Thumbs up, thumbs down for Saturday

September 28, 2013

Thumbs down: To factors that led the Centre County Library board of trustees Thursday to vote to shut down the East Penns Valley branch in Millheim. Factors included declining use of the library, rising costs for the system and cuts in funding. Library officials called the move “regrettable but necessary.”

Thumbs up: To the Friends of the East Penns Valley Branch Library, a community group that will take control of the Millheim center’s resources with the hopes of re-establishing a library there. With support from residents and businesses, the Millheim area might again see a library in operation. Good luck.

Thumbs down: To a Karthaus man who pleaded guilty to animal cruelty for shooting his dog and leaving it to die in his yard in April. Barry Grove, 57, is also in trouble because he was not permitted to possess a firearm due to past transgressions. He will be sentenced Oct. 17. A sad, shocking story.
