UNIVERSITY PARK — For some runners, the Color Run is the highlight of their journey. On Sunday, for the first time, the Color Run is making its way to Penn State to help raise funds for the Homecoming Committee.
“There was a huge demand to bring the race there,” said race director Walter Sonntag.
Sonntag said that the race will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday at Medlar Field. The race will then follow Porter Road to Hastings Road to Pollock Road and Burrowes Road to Curtin Road and back to the field.
He said that 10,000 people would be sent onto the course in waves every three to four minutes to keep the race organized. In white shirts, runners are plastered with colored powder every kilometer.
Sonntag added that the race got such a good response it sold out with 10,000 runners.
“It’s more than just a run,” Sonntag said. “It’s to promote well-being and health, and working with local charities to give back to the community.”
Sunday’s Color Run will be the third this year for Penn State alumna Shelly Davis. She said that this summer she ran in the race in Philadelphia, where she lives, and then in Englishtown, N.J., a month later.
“I do it because it’s the most fun I have running and being a part of a larger group of people who give back,” Davis said.
When she heard that the Color Run was making its way to Penn State, she said, she had to be a part of it.
“I love this community and school, and wanted to give back while doing something I really enjoy, like running,” Davis said.
Sonntag said he was not sure how much money would be raised by the event this year, but that last year, more than $1 million was raised nationwide for dozens of organizations.
“We think Penn State is a great place, and working with the Homecoming Committee has been a blast,” Sonntag said. “We want to come back next year and make the event even bigger.”
Although registration is sold out for Penn State’s inaugural Color Run, Sonntag said the event is open to members of the public who want to support local runners.
